Is columbia proofreaders a scam?

I’ve seen it advertised in AM New York’s classified ads. I have experience in proofreading and copyediting and the ad said that they do training and placement for their proofreaders. However, I always have to call a answering service and wait for someone from columbia proofreaders to call me back. And when they do, they give me a phone number to call and rush my off the phone. I can’t ask any questions. I call the given phone number the next day and get someone else on the phone, they are just as rude. Has anyone had experience with columbia…

How do I move on with my new career as an editor?

My degree was a Bachelor’s of Science in Biology with a minor in English, but I ended up with a 10-year career in nonprofit writing and fundraising. For the past three years I’ve been able to work from home – I have two in elementary school. As a favor to some friends I became an editor for three (hobby industry) publishing companies and I LOVE it. Or I would, but even being an editor for three companies gave me one job this year.
How do I become an editor for other, more mainstream, companies? I’d love to do copyediting…

What is the most common word for “computer” in Latin American Spanish? “Computadora” or “Ordenador”?

I’m copyediting the Closed Captioning of a math video, to wit, the Spanish-translated text for a math video.

The translator wrote “computador” (without the “a” at the end), but the dictionary shows “ordenador”–which is used mainly in Spain, I think.

However, the video makers are catering to the Spanish-speaking students of the US and Caribbean. They have instructed us not to “overcorrect” with textbook “Spain-Spanish” terms. We have to use the regional words of Mexico, US-raised Spanish-speaking students from Puerto Rico, Dominican republic, etc. My cousins in México use “computadora.” But is that what Puerto Ricans and Dominicans use predominantly…

How to I place accomplishments on my resume?

I’m in the journalism/copyediting industry. I’m looking for a new job and every book or website pertaining to writing a winning resume suggest to list accomplisments that you acheived at your last job using percentages or numbers. My last job was as a copy editor. How can I translate my keen eye for detail and knack for catching the small and less obvious mistakes in copy as an accomplishment? I’m great at this, but how do I demonstrate this talent in a list of accomplishments. Any fellow copyeditors out there that can give me a few examples or suggestions?

“Ads editing” or “ads creation” in a resume?..?

Please, any suggestions! Is it OK to put:
Assisted copywriters in ads editing,
or
(…the same…) in ads creation
or
Assisted in copywriting and copyediting

I’m not sure about “editing”, it seems a bit too simple…”Copyediting” is quite different for me from just “editing”…

HELP! Book Publishing!?

I’m having a hard time. I wrote a story and I don’t know how or what do to next. I’d like to get it published, but should I copyright it before sending it to a self-publishing house, or should I get an agent? Where do I find a trustworthy list of agents. If I sell it to a publisher, do they own my manuscript? Where can I get Copyediting done? Should I copyright the work before getting it edited? Do publishing houses do copyediting and proofing after buying the manuscript or before? How much is too much for royalties?

I’m…

Classes for aspiring publishers?

I am an undergraduate college student who is highly interested in pursuing publishing as a career. I am majoring in English to prepare for my career, as well as reading Publisher’s Weekly and other periodicals. Are there classes that would be beneficial for me to take now besides English courses? My school does not have any class on proofreading or copyediting. Thanks!

I want to talk TO editors about BECOMING an editor – are there any copyediting or publishing forums?

I’m getting rather frustrated…
I’ve been thinking about becoming a copy editor for a year or so. I’m 18 and planning to major in English, and then I want to copyedit, preferably for a publisher, so I have a steady income while working on my own books.
I have taken an online community class in copyediting, but there weren’t many resources, or places to talk with other editors.

I’ve been searching the whole world wide web for a community where I can talk to other editors or publishers who might be able to give me some answers on…
