I have an online business.
I do translations.
There’s something taken for granted in the field, and that’s terms of payment.
1 month, always.
Sometimes you’ll hit a private client that pays you on the spot.
Its like that, you get used to it.

I did a booboo by not asking about the terms of payment–basically, to request a Purchase Order–to a new professional translation firm. I worked on a big contract for a week and a half. I gave my invoice a few days later. I took for granted this translation agency was simply a run-of-the-mill job-giver for us freelances like the rest.

They answered with a big thank you for the receipt of invoice and wrote their terms of payment is 45-60 days after delivery of the invoice!

Let’s do the math, 10 days of work, 4 days of wait till I invoice, 60 days of wait period on invoice? C’mon!

I don’t know the laws of the land on this point in Germany where the co. is HQ’ed nor from Canada.

When we pay bills, its one month or I get bad credit and end up on collection. That’s how it goes.
I accepted their job on the complete idea that the terms of payment would be 30 days tops. Like the rest of ‘em.

I sent an email, very politely asking that I’d be on a 30 days payment schedule like the rest of the profession’s usual payment term. I didn’t get a reply.

I’m irate. A whole quarter to wait for one’s due! Add bank delays for clearance and all that shenanigan… sob.

Any idea?

Nothing inherently illegal about it. Depends on the terms of the contract, and the invoice.

It’s easiest to deal with this at the beginning of the contract. When I have a client sign a retainer agreement, the retainer says that an account is due immediately, and interest will begin accruing 30 days after the invoice date. Also states the percentage of the interest.

If that isn’t there…well, the account should still have a term in it about when it is due, regardless. Within reason, you can theoretically hold the client to it even if there’s no express language in the contract.

Trouble is this: What’s the remedy?

Let’s suppose you decided that 45-60 days wasn’t acceptable. What can you do about it? And the answer is basically “Absolutely nothing”. I mean, you could sue, but that will take a lot longer than 60 days to get a result.

Put a term in your contract about the rate of interest on overdue accounts and when the interest starts to accrue. You should probably get legal advice first to determine what legal interest is in our jurisdiction. Then you could insist on interest when they dragged their feet.

I’ve been looking all over Google for really good freelance writing sites when I came across Helium.com. It was okay, but I am just trying to broaden out my sources. :) I’ve looked into AssociatedContent.com and some others, and was wondering if you guys know any other websites besides Helium and AC.com which you can get paid well.

P.S. I’ve already submitted 35 articles on Helium, and I only got a measly 92 cents. XD

SUBMITTING articles is one thing – Having them published in a paying forum is an entirely different matter – whether it’s online or in print – probably a very tiny % of unsolicited articles ever get published anywhere

and very few online websites are going to pay much if anything – most of those websites probably have little or no income, so they have nothing to pay anyone with

Im using the above mentioned keyword tools. Im writing an article about handheld book scanners. so that is my keyword phrase. Google says about 1600 searches were carried out for that keyword phrase in just 1 MONTH. But webtracker and keyword discovery returns only 15 searches in a 12 month span! This seems very unlikely. They also say that only 568 searches were done for the keyword phrase “grooming your pet” in a years time. Again very unlikely. Didnt search google keyword for it but it will return MUCH higher results.

Are they doing the same job which it doesnt seem likely. I would like to know how many searches were done for Handheld Book Scanner. Which is correct? Why are they so different.

Anyone help would be much appreciated.

the reason that you get the different result from the different tools is that all the tools are provide the detail or the result from the data available with them or in their databases. whenever you make the search in any search engine it will match the your words with their database and then gives you the maximum result on that words.
all search engine has the various amount of the data as they collect the information on the internet with their own rules and regulations.
the google has the maximum data in its database in the internet world as it collects more data from any other engine
from 100% the 80% of search has been made on to the google search engine and the remaining 20% has been divide between other engines. so you will get the more and maximum result for your search then other search engines.
as the google is used more than any other the result or the data provided by it will be perfect then any other engines. you can be reliable on the result of the google that’s the sure.

I finished college in December, and I’d like to get started working in advertising or publishing. Writing is my strongest point, so I want to work on ad copy or editing for publication. I have limited experience in both, with small nonprofit organizations that a lot of people in the field might not take too seriously.

In my job search, the only “marketing” opportunities I have been able to find are direct sales / cold calling / telemarketing, which isn’t what I’m interested in. I have heard that an internship is a good way to start, but I just can’t accept anything unpaid.

How should I get started in either of these fields?

I would suggest that you would be best to find someone fairly local to you to do this work, otherwise you are going to spend masses of time corresponding back and forth on design elements. Do a search for web designers with your area and you should come up with a few. Then contact each to compare their fees etc. I would also ask them to give you the name of some of the sites they have designed and check them out.

Well, there’s online self publishing like Amazon CreateSpace or Lulu.com. Otherwise, read up on agents, and the best publishing house for your genre, target audience, etc. Good luck!

Aside from being paid for research and writing time, there are other things (meetings, hour long phone calls, interviews, etc) that go along with freelance writing. All of these aspects take time, which an “on the clock” job would pay you for. So how, as a freelancer, do you ensure that you aren’t giving away precious time? For (a specific) example, I have recently agreed to edit some eBooks for a man who calls everyday and takes up at least an hour to an hour and a half with each call. I don’t have that much time to waste, as it amounts to nearly a full day’s work (7 hours!) by the end of the week! Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
