The three dumbest mistakes in freelance writing are easy to avoid, as long as you know what they are. Do you know what they are? Read on to find out.

There are two types of freelance writer. Let’s call them Type E (for enthusiastic) and Type B (for blah.) The first type is making a great income, loves his writing, and gets great satisfaction from it. He’s enthused! He can see a long career ahead of him, where he makes a great six figure income because of the huge demand for competent writers.

The second type of freelance writer, Type B for “blah” is a nervous soul. He’s not sure why he’s writing, whether he should be writing at all… he spends a lot of time depressed, and wondering whether he’s wasting his time writing. Not that he does much writing, he’s too busy questioning himself.

The three dumbest mistakes to avoid in freelance writing

1. Not writing enough

Most, if not all, challenges you face as a freelance writer are solved when you write enough.

But how much is enough?

That depends on how much time you have to write. If you can only spare 15 minutes a day to write, a page is enough. If you can spare an hour, four pages is enough. If you have an hour to write, and haven’t written four pages, you’re making the first dumb mistake in freelance writing.

2. Not sending out your writing

Freelance writers write and sell. If you’re letting your half-completed novel languish on your hard drive, ask yourself why. Is writing a hobby for you? If it is, and you don’t want to sell your novel, that’s fine. Enjoy yourself.

However, if you want to sell your writing, selling is part of your everyday life as a writer. Sell something every day, or you’re making the second dumb mistake to avoid in freelance writing.

3. Not promoting your writing skills

If you don’t promote your writing skills, you won’t sell your writing. The ways you can promote your skills are endless. You can advertise, write press releases, call potential clients…

Writers who imagine promoting their skills as a freelance writer doesn’t apply to them are making the third dumb mistake to avoid as a freelance writer.

So now you know that not writing enough, not sending out your writing and not promoting your writing skills are the three dumbest mistakes to avoid in freelance writing. Avoid these three mistakes, and you’ll become a Type E (for enthusiastic) writer, and your life will change faster than you can imagine.

Freelance writing has been a fantasy of mine for many years. When I was a lot younger than I am now, I did not have the time or the income to pursue freelance writing full time. If you are a new writer or an unknown writer, attempting to write for a living as your only source of income it will probably not succeed unless you do not mind not eating and not paying the bills.

This does not mean that you cannot make a good living freelance writing. It just means that you should not quit your day job before you make a name for yourself and figure out a couple things like your niche market and your particular style or your voice.

A lot of people who fantazies about freelance writing are under the impression that you have to take some expensive course to learn to write. My personal advise is a lot more practical. The best way to become a good writer is to simply do a lot of writing. You have to write every day. Even people who have been writing for many years can loose some of their unique abilities if they stop writing for a considerable length of time. Writers have to write every day. It is just that simple; if you want to be a good writer, you have to write.

Another thing that a new freelance writer has to remember is to learn the business end of writing. Anybody can call themselves a writer, but not everyone gets published and that is the difference between a writer and a published Author. In order to get recognized, a writer needs to be published.

A good rule of thumb to take into consideration when choosing a potential publisher is the advertisements the publisher has in their publication. The advertisements will tell you a great deal about the type of readership that a particular publication is targeting. This information is invaluable when it comes to targeting your audience. Having a good idea of what type of content a publisher will be interested in will save you a lot of the time and disappointment you experience when your work is rejected due to a conflict in relevance to the publishers reader interests.

Another good tool is to join a writers work shop or start your own writers group. Getting feedback from other writers is a valuable and cheap tool for many writers. It also helps to be a part of a group that shares in your writing experience. Writer workshops can also be a very valuable place to network. There are many different methods writers use to be productive. Over time you will find what works for you. The method that works for me is to simply choose a subject and start writing. Some people need to be where it is quiet, some people need a lot of stimulus, others need to be near nature. You have to figure out what works best for you. Just remember that your writing productivity should not depend totally on outside stimulus. You need to develop a level of discipline where you can produce the material regardless of the circumstances.

Finally, set deadlines and productivity goals for yourself. Deadlines are important because they will help to move you along. Without a deadline and a productivity goal, a new writer is not likely to get any work done and never get published. Last but not least, do not let rejections make you give up. Everyone experiences having their submissions rejected from time to time. If you cannot handle rejection, maybe freelance writing is not for you. Good luck!

Are you a freelance writer who is looking to maximize your earnings?  If so, you need to find more writing projects.  While job boards and bidding websites are always a great place to get started, another good place to look is Craigslist.org.  While Craigslist has gotten a bad reputation among many freelance writers due to the number of frauds that target the website, there are some legitimate well-paying writing projects that you can find in the mix.

To get started, visit Craigslist.org.  Now, you can only search one location page at a time.  You may want to get started with your local area; select your state and nearest city.  At the search box on the left, enter in your search phrase.  This can be anything related to freelance writing, like writing, writer, articles, press release, blogger, and more.  Before starting your search, change the default search settings from “for sale” to “gigs.”

Note:  As previously stated, you can only search one location at a time on Craigslist.org.  As a freelance writer, you have the opportunity to work from someone clear across the country or halfway around the world.  For that reason, you want to search all of Craigslist.  This can take time on the website, as you would need to perform independent searches for each location page.  To save time, you may want to consider buying a Craigslist search tool.  Although optional, consider it an investment that will pay for itself.

After you perform a search (whether it be with a search tool or right on Craigslist.org) you will see a list of search results.  Since you searched the gigs section, this should be writing projects for pay.  Now, it is time to start examining your options.  When doing so, there are a number of factors you want to consider.  They include:

Your Qualifications:  Some writing projects are easier than others.  A website owner needing health articles may request someone not only with writing experience, but experience in healthcare.  If you do not feel like you are qualified, it is time to move onto the next project.

Your Pay:  As you know, freelance writers work for varying levels of pay.  You will also find that individuals and companies pay varying rates for similar projects too.  All you need to do is read the Craigslist ad to determine what the pay is.  If a pay rate isn’t listed, you can send an email asking.  If the rate is too little, all you need to do is move onto the next project listed.

Your risk:  As mentioned above, lots of freelance writers are warned about using Craigslist to find writing projects.  The biggest problem you will encounter is people who take your work and run without paying.  You can reduce the risk by asking for a percentage up front, avoiding opportunities that are just too good to be true, and by starting with a client by only doing small batches of articles.

As you can see, Craigslist.org does have its risks when it comes to freelance writing projects.  However, for every low-paying gig or fraud you see, you should find a legitimate one somewhere in the mix.  The key is knowing what to look for and to always trust your best judgment.

I remember the first time a client offered me a case study writing assignment.

I was petrified.

It was early in my freelance writing career and I didn’t even know what one looked like. I had a lot of questions. “What the heck is a case study?” “How long is it?” “What is the format?” “How much do I charge?”

I didn’t have a clue.

Of course, these days, I know more. A lot more. In fact, I write dozens of case studies for clients each year.

Case studies now rank high on my list of the most fascinating — and lucrative — projects I handle. (I’m sure glad that client offered me the job all those years ago!)

If you’re unfamiliar with case studies, don’t worry. They’re really quite simple. A case study is just a fancy name for a success story – the tale of a happy customer and his or her experience using a product or service.

Lately, I’ve noticed that more and more companies need case studies written, yet have difficulties finding writers who can do the job.

That spells OPPORTUNITY for you and me.

And it gets better. Consider the following:

Case studies are not difficult to write.

They are similar in style and format to a newsletter article. So if you can write one of those, you can write a case study.

Case studies are relatively short

Usually about 400-800 words in length. Once you’ve gained a little experience, you’ll be able to knock one off in less than a day.

The formats are standardized

Unlike ads and direct mail, you won’t get stressed out by having to come up with a dazzling new concept or killer headline. The basic structure of a case study is remarkably simple. All that’s required of you is to get the facts and write a good piece.

More companies are scrambling to get case studies written today than ever before. I can’t give you an exact figure but, in my opinion, the demand for case study writers has increased significantly over the past couple of years.

There is little competition

I’m not sure why, but few copywriters go after this market. Some may not know it exists. Others may mistakenly think that case studies are dull or technical. Not true! Case study writing is storytelling. It’s fun.

Case studies pay well

Surprisingly well. Now you won’t get the superstar rates paid to big-league direct mail copywriters. But most clients do pay handsomely for case study writing. Earning $100 per hour is not an unreasonable expectation for an experienced writer. I know many who earn a lot more.
