Where The Money Is:

For freelancers who are primarily interested in earning a very high income, it’s smart to look to industries that mail very large quantities. Industries that mail very large quantities can do so only if they have a very large pool of buyers.

And consumers are a very large market, especially when it comes to certain widely used products such as face cream, vitamins, and publications. If a company drops a million pieces whenever they mail, and they’re selling the product in a one-step (mail order), then they would place a very high value on the copywriter who can get results, even if incremental.

This is the arena where you’ll find your most lucrative opportunities…work that can often command mailing royalties in addition to a hefty up-front flat rate. Imagine writing a mail order package for $15,000 and then making $20,000 every time it rolls out to 1 million names!

Of course, like practically everything else in life, the big mailers are fewer in number, representing the top of the pyramid; many smaller B2C companies occupy the middle and bottom portions of the pyramid.

Companies in the middle group (mid-size companies) are also great sources of business, paying well if not astronomically so. Small businesses, however, often do not have the funds to pay for professional copywriting, and often don’t understand direct marketing or the value of copywriting, and must be educated. A common phrase uttered by the experienced copywriter is “I don’t take clients I have to educate.”

The Business-to-Business Market:

Unlike the B2C market, the consumer and prospect universes of businesses are usually much smaller, often occupying niches that can be miniscule indeed. In such cases, all marketing costs are scrutinized with the utmost detail, with each campaign targeting a certain ROI. It’s not uncommon for a large, well-known brand to consider a campaign a success if it brings in 15 or 30 high quality leads. (Sometimes these leads have buying power that reaches into the millions of dollars.)

According to Direct Marketing Association statistics, about two-thirds of the B2B space is lead-generating in nature, with the remaining one-third order-generating. A review of my own copywriting samples bears this out.

For the copywriter, the difference between a lead-generation job and a mail order job comes down to money. Since it usually takes more “real estate” (space) to convince someone to “write a check now” than it does to convince someone to “raise her hand” (lead-generation), an order-generating job should pay more than a lead-generation job, and sometimes much more.

In terms of pay structure, most B2B companies work on flat rates and would find the idea of “bonuses” and “royalties” foreign. However, I have successfully negotiated pay structures that offer extra pay for goals met.

Dangerous? Absolutely.

But once you have the utmost confidence in your knowledge and talents, and if you trust the company implicitly (a nailed down contract is essential for any job, no matter who they are or what they pay)…then you can do a little “gambling” and increase your potential for income, to say nothing of “upping the excitement.”

Writing has always been a passion of mine. Ever since I could remember I have loved to write. There’s just something about putting words on paper (or into a word processor) that gives me immense satisfaction. I guess it’s because I have an opinion and I just can’t hold back in sharing it. Millions of people are now surfing the internet through Google every second of every day looking for information. The written word has never been so accessible so quickly and the amount of information that is becoming available on the internet is growing every day. You probably knew that (you are here reading this after all) but did you know that you can earn a good living writing on the internet?

Seriously, you could be earning over $100,000 a year working only a few hours a day if you are writing online. Online businesses are hungry for fresh written content in the form of articles, reviews, blog content and even sales copy and it is dead easy to get involved. Writing jobs are highly searched for positions amongst full time and part time writers.  For the full time writer looking for a steady gig or the freelancer building her portfolio, there are many opportunities to be found online and offline.  The key to securing ongoing business lies with how creative you can be.  Are you looking in the same places hundreds of other writers are looking?  Or are you creating your own opportunities and looking under rocks most people don’t consider?  Depending on what you are looking for, you can land a writing job in one week.  How, do you ask?  You can do so, by contacting or searching for people who need writers, are not writers themselves and are not usually contacted by writers.  Consider these three  sources for writing jobs:

Local businesses – Contact local businesses and offer to create marketing materials for the company in exchange for monetary compensation or the products they offer. Online opinions – There are hundreds if not thousands of sites where you can get paid for your opinions, expertise and advice. Technology Forums – Many techies are just that.  Technical individuals that usually shy away from writing and could use the assistance of a professional or at least competent writer.

Local businesses are in need of good writers who can produce marketing materials, sales letters, internal communications and additional written correspondence.  This is not just a great way to build up your portfolio; it is a great way to land a full time job.  Have you heard of internal communications consultants?  These are writers who create letters and other documents for employees within an organization.  If you are not pursing the nine to five, then consider building your portfolio by offering this service to several different businesses in your local area.  Once you’ve built up a clientele and a good reputation for producing quality work, you will then start receiving referrals and watching your business grow.  Yes, I said your business.

Online opinion or article sites offer numerous ways for you get paid as a writer.  There are websites that will pay you based on the number of views your articles receive.  There are also sites that allow you to post reviews and share feedback for products that you have used.  There are even websites that will pay you to answer questions posted by their readers and you will be paid if your answer is satisfactory.  Many of these sites will pay you via a mailed check, Paypal or a third party account.  You can make anywhere from $10 – $100+ depending on the time you dedicate to each site.

Technology forums or any forums that cater to the technically inclined usually offer a service that will connect their forum members to writers who can offer unique content for their websites.  If you are remotely familiar with SEO (search engine optimization) and the power of keywords, then you can do very well writing website content.  I personally have received from $50 to over $100 for writing text for websites.  I love researching and reading information online.  I probably spend far too much time on my laptop but I also learn a great deal.  That is just one example of how writers can collaborate with webmasters or the technically inclined and make money online.

There are two main areas of medical writing: marketing and clinical. This article focuses on marketing medical writing and is intended as background information for people considering a career in medical writing, who are interested in knowing a little bit more about what could be in store for them.

Medical Communications or Medical Education Agencies provide bespoke communications services to pharmaceutical companies, the aim of which is to enhance clinical knowledge so that the best healthcare outcomes are achieved for the patient. The agencies address this challenge on a number of fronts, working with many interested parties.
Marketing Medical Writing jobs may be in-house roles (working for a pharmaceutical / biotechnology or medical device company) or more often than not, within medical communications agencies carrying out work on behalf pharmaceutical companies or institutions.

The purpose of the Medical Writer is to produce many different types of marketing materials for use in marketing, promotion, training and medical education. Just a few examples of the types of materials produced might include, manuscripts for journal publication, feature articles for magazines, conference reports,  posters and abstracts; training aids, including slide-kits and lecture notes and educational materials such as patient leaflets or web copy. This is why it is important for medical writers to make sure they keep abreast of industry developments, regulatory guidelines and medical innovations. You are not expected to have an expert knowledge of every therapy area, as you will learn more about specific therapy areas when you work on a particular account.

In an agency environment you will interact with both internal and external teams. As part of an inter–disciplinary team you will work with account handlers, business development and production staff and you may also have a remit to liaise with clients and freelancers. It will be useful to have well developed inter-personal skills as often there is a balance to be struck between competing stake holders in a project.

As a medical writer you can enjoy a fairly structured career path. The classical route runs from medical writer to editorial director via senior medical writer and editorial manager / team leader. As your career progresses emphasis shifts away from hands on writing, as you take on more managerial and mentoring responsibilities and become more involved in account strategy. Again this is only one example and there are many more opportunities and avenues available to pursue.

There are no hard and fast rules on the qualifications required to becoming a medical writer, although companies generally look for candidates with a Life Sciences degree and increasingly a higher degree (Masters or Doctorate). You will already have been developing your writing skills, have an analytical thought process and a knack for grasping the salient facts buried in data or text. It is fairly standard for a company to request that candidates complete a writing test during the interview process to assess the candidate’s level of writing ability; these tests come in all shapes and sizes and will test and reflect the skills and abilities that the company deem most important.
