How good is the career outlook for a stenographer?
I am considering looking into a career as a stenographer – BUT I don’t want to get into something that will be phased out in a few years.
Also – what skills are important to have i.e. I imagine you need to have good grammar, writing and communications skills… What else is important?
Lastly – is it a stressful job in terms of consistency of income assuming that you are working freelance – which seems to be the bulk of the work avail.
Thank you

My wife recently found herself jobless so she used the opportunity to hunt for a change of career. She was really stuck until she unearthed the website in the box below which gives guidance on how to evaluate a career. Now she understands where she’s going, and more importantly how to arrive.
Do you also mean Court Reporter?
If so, I doubt they’ll be phased out. Tape recorders pick up sneezing, coughing, outside traffic.
Court Reporters naturally eliminate all noises. Keen hearing, concentration, good grammar, staminar and endurance are essential, i.e. you could take Testimony for hours.
As far as consistency of income, re freelancing-depends. The more agencies you register with, the more job opportunities. You’ll go on Depos (Depositions), Conferences, EBT’s (Examinations Before Trials), Meetings, etc., Seminars.
Then there’s Close-captioning. A Reporter remotely types the text you see scroll at the bottom of a tv screen for those hard-of-hearing.
