Product Description
For over twenty years, How to Write & Sell Your First Novel has been giving the writing and marketing instruction you need to get that first novel published. Authors Oscar Collier and Frances Spatz Leighton will walk you through every step of the process from choosing the type of novel you want to write to publicity and self-promotion basics, and all the steps in between, such as:
- Establishing daily writing routines
- Developing compelling characters, realistic dialogue, and an engaging plot
- Revising and editing your manuscript for submission
- Deciding whether or not an agent is right for you
- Handling contract negotiations
In addition to all of this great instructional advice, How to Write & Sell Your First Novel also includes interviews with novelists about their publishing experience, as well as the working methods, attitudes, and specific strategies superstar novelists–like Stephen King, John Grisham, Mary Higgins Clark, and others–used to get published. Use their tips to help you build your own success!

I have read a lot of books on the subject of writing, yet never have I been so encouraged by one. I would not hesitate to recommend it. I will definitely read it again.

I found this book interesting and helpful. The first part goes over briefly the steps of writing a novel and getting published. The second part shares the experiences of other writers. If you are not interested in the second part, purchase a different how to book. Although part one was helpful, it is only a quick view of what you need to know. Of the whole book, I did find Chapter 4 inspiring. You are basically walked through the four steps of what you need to know about your book before you begin writing. This book is worth the read, just don’t rely on it to take you all the way to the publisher’s desk. Of course this is only one writer’s opinion. I have seen here that others found this book extremely helpful.

The practical advice in this book got me started! I began the “three page a day” regime and I have now written three novels–my first, “Forever Retro Blues” is published. I knew very little about publishing, but this book directed me how to write, look for an agent, publisher, etc. They give inspiring examples of how someone went from a nobody, to a publishered writer. Examples abound of how persistance pays off. If you really want to get off the ground, get this book!

I received this book as a gift from my husband as I was halfway through a novel that I was writing. It gave me a lot of confidence-as I read the tips, I realized that so far I had been doing everything correct. I sent the finished product via a query to 20 publishers and the first response that I received wanted it. I keep this book close to me as I work on my next novel.
